Lancaster County’s Labor Force experienced growth in May, increasing employment levels by 400 workers, and the overall participation in the labor force by 100 workers. The majority of the increase came from people moving from unemployment to employment which continues to be a healthy sign of recovery. Lancaster is tied for 8th lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, along with Franklin and Union counties.
As typical in the summer months, Lancaster experienced seasonal fluctuations within industry. Leisure & hospitality had a seasonal increase of 1,200 jobs in May. Education & health services and government each had a seasonal decrease of 600 due to the spring semester wrapping up at local public and private colleges and universities. Over the year, seven of the ten supersectors added jobs with the largest increase in trade, transportation & utilities
(+2,300).
